Every year, my family celebrates Navratri, and for me, it’s not just a festival. It’s a time to feel the rhythm of the universe, to connect with the energy around us, and to honour the power that surrounds every living thing. Navratri means “nine nights,” and is about celebrating Goddess Durga in all her forms. But to me, it’s also about passion, purpose, and the idea that the energy you put out into the world comes back to you, respect is respected, and the kind receive kindness.
Each of the nine nights is a journey through different energies, different colours, and different aspects of life. My family and I follow the rituals and dress in the colours associated with each goddess, and it’s incredible how each day feels like it aligns my spirit with the universe.
Day 1 – White: Maa Shailputri
The first day begins with white, a colour that feels calm and grounding. Maa Shailputri represents strength and stability, and as we set up the Kalash at home, I feel a quiet sense of purpose. It reminds me that to honor the universe, I first need to honor myself, mind, body, and spirit.
Day 2 – Red: Maa Brahmacharini
Red brings passion. Maa Brahmacharini teaches devotion and inner strength. Fasting and offering fruits make me think about focus, determination, and the energy I carry into my actions. The universe responds to effort, and this day is about lighting that inner fire.
Day 3 – Royal Blue: Maa Chandraghanta
Royal blue feels cosmic, like looking at the night sky. Maa Chandraghanta inspires courage and protection. During puja, I think about clearing negativity from my own life and sending positivity outward. It’s a reminder that the universe respects harmony and balance.
Day 4 – Yellow: Maa Kushmanda
Yellow is pure joy and vitality. Maa Kushmanda is said to have created the universe with her smile, and celebrating her reminds me that positivity and light create energy. Smiling, helping others, and living with enthusiasm is how we honor the universe.
Day 5 – Green: Maa Skandamata
Green is growth. Maa Skandamata embodies nurturing and strength. I feel this energy when I help my family, write a supporting message for my friends, or just spend time outside. Respect and love grow where they are sown, and this day is about cultivating that energy consciously.
Day 6 – Grey: Maa Katyayani
Grey may seem quiet, but it’s balanced and steady. Maa Katyayani teaches courage and the triumph of good over evil. She reminds me that facing challenges with calm and determination brings the universe’s blessings into alignment with our efforts.
Day 7 – Orange: Maa Kalaratri
Orange feels vibrant and fierce. Maa Kalaratri represents the destruction of negativity and fearlessness. Dancing during Garba or Dandiya, I feel her energy in my chest, a protective force that clears the path for growth and positivity.
Day 8 – Peacock Green: Maa Mahagauri
Peacock green is the colour of renewal and balance. Maa Mahagauri shows that after effort and devotion, purity and wisdom follow. I think about how my actions ripple out, how kindness and respect come back, and how honoring the universe means honoring others as well.
Day 9 – Pink: Maa Siddhidatri
Pink is love, compassion, and beginnings. Maa Siddhidatri gives wisdom and spiritual clarity. On this day, we perform Kanya Puja, showing respect and gratitude for life itself. It’s a reminder that when we align with the universe’s energy, we become part of something bigger, and our actions carry meaning beyond ourselves.
Navratri isn’t just a celebration, it’s a practice of energy, intention, and respect. Each ritual, colour, and dance are a way of connecting to the universe and understanding that the power we honor flows back into us. Living with that energy in mind makes every day richer, kinder, and more meaningful. For me, Navratri is a festival of the soul as much as it is of culture, reminding me that honoring the universe honors the life I am blessed to live.
